Kilkee has been a popular holiday resort in West Clare since the middle of the 19th century. The West Clare Railway which opened at the end of the 19th century brought many more visitors to Kilkee and from then on its popularity grew. It has been particularly with residents of Limerick city many of whom spend their summer holidays there.

The town has developed good accommodation including including a few hotels and bed and breakfasts and there are numerous restaurants and pubs and other entertainment centers for visitors.

There is a nice sandy beach which is suitable for swimming, surf boarding and surfing and is generally considered safe for children. Kilkee is also a popular diving destination. Famous diver Jacques Cousteau rated it among the top five diving spots in the world.

Nearby there is an 18 hole golf course and also some spectacular cliff scenery.

Famous visitors to Kilkee

Famous visitors include Charlotte Brontë, Lord Tennyson, Percy French and Che Guevara. Che’s visits to Clare will be the subject of another news item later.
